Artist Spotlight – Roger Sanchez

Leading up to his set on Saturday night at the Regression Sessions label launch party, we thought we’d take a look back on S-man aka Roger Sanchez career from his humble beginnings in New York to worldwide Dance Music star.

Roger-Sanchez

Born in 1967 to Dominican parents, he is the elder of two sons. Roger has gone on to built a 20+ year career as a house music DJ, Remixer and Grammy Award Winner for a remix he did for “Hella Good” by No Doubt. He has received the “Best House DJ” award in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2007 for the DJ Awards.

The crafting of Roger Sanchez, the DJ, started in the late 80s in Corona, Queens a hotbed for creativity and expression at the time. The early roots of hip-hop and the turntable/graffiti/break dancing culture surrounding it sprouting all over New York were particularly appealing to Roger. He attended parties by the Bronx River and other jams as a break-dancer and graffiti artist. Roger Sanchez was introduced to DJ’ing through friends… and the rest is history.

Honing his skills over a number of years, he began to get booked to play New York nightclubs such as the Tunnel playing alongside Djs such as Erick Morillo and David Morales. He started his own clubnight “Ego Trip” with his Sanchez mixtapes selling like crazy on broadway. By 1989, Gladys Pizarro from Strictly Rhythm Records had got in touch to see if he was interested in production…a year later, he had recorded his first single “Luv Dancin” as Underground Solution.

Sanchez went on to produce numerous hits in the European and World Charts with both his own music and the remixes he has created for artists such as Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue, Daft Punk, Madonna, The Police, No Doubt and Maroon 5. He hosts his own weekly radio show called Release Yourself with 15 million listeners worldwide along with a bi-weekly podcast.

He is most well known for his classic feel good track “Another Chance” released in February 2001. It went on to become a worldwide hit and continues to soundtrack dancefloors to this day. It was number-one in the UK Singles Chart for one week. The song is based on a sample from “I Won’t Hold You Back” by Toto.

Looking forward to Saturday night, we feel blessed to be welcoming such a legend to the Fire booth. Roger Sanchez plays the Regression Sessions label launch party on 04/02. Click the flyer below for tickets.
